Memories of Grandmothers Sunday Dinners
Growing up a country girl, my family raised most of our food. Sundays was always a fried chicken spread with mashed potatoes, green beans, macaroni and cheese and those wonderful little buttermilk corn muffins. we milked our own cows, what we called cow milk. my grandmother made her buttermilk and all the butter they used. All this would be displayed on an old wooden table, with grandmas finest table cloth. My brother and I enjoyed the fried chicken most of all. My favorite piece of all was the pulley bone (We Called it) my grandma would always make sure I had that piece of chicken. (yes I was spoiled.) I remember in those days the plates would be cleaned up and all freshen up and then would cover with a clean white table cloth over the leftover food. I know!!! we would never do that today. But back in the day they did. I don’t remember any of us getting sick. My aunt and uncle and my 2 cousins were there every Sunday, we would sneak quietly back in the kitchen and sneak under that table cloth and grab us a chicken leg and run out side and eat it. We ripped , run and played and when we got thirsty we would go in the screened in back porch and get a dipper full of cold spring water. I can’t remember anything tasting so good an so fresh.
